Personal Injury Protection on Your New York Auto Policy.

Personal Injury Protection on Your New York Auto Policy.

I was reviewing some of our auto insurance claims yesterday and found a few from 2007,2008 and 2009. Most of these are P.I.P. claims (Personal Injury protection) where are driver wasn’t at fault. We call this “no fault” in New York, where each party to the auto accident, collects their injuries claims from their own auto insurance policy.

In 1 case, over $225,000 has been paid out, another $59,000 paid out and yet a 3rd is at $47,000 and still open.

The reason I bring this up is because the minimum limit in New York is $50,000. And most discount auto insurance companies only sell the minimum. They don’t want open ended claims for 4, 5 or 6 years. This is there way of limiting their losses on P.I.P.

I think this is totally wrong and not being a true advocate for insured’s in New York.

At my agency, we max out P.I.P. with adding on $150,000 of additional P.I.P., which then includes loss wages, hospitalization and in-home care if needed. And we find people that have such claims, often don’t find out about their coverage until AFTER a claim.

We at Larsen Insurance Agency never want to say, “You don’t have coverage for that” but instead, don’t worry you have the proper coverage you need.

Be a smart insurance consumer and know what your auto insurance policy says!
