Things in your garage aren’t covered by homeowners insurance.

Let me explain – your boat that is now stored inside of your garage, still need it’s own boat insurance policy even during the winter. If that garage starts on fire or collapses due to weight of ice and snow, your boat is not covered by your homeowners insurance policy.

Same thing applies to your motorcycle – just because it is inside of your garage, it is NOT covered by your homeowners insurance, which covers the garage. You still need to protect your motorcycle with motorcycle insurance. The insurance on your garage won’t help you here.

Snowmobiles, ATV’s, Campers…think of any “land conveyance” type vehicle and it would need it’s own insurance policy. Same with Seadoo’s or Wave runners for water conveyance. The exception to this would be your ride on lawnmower/tractor type ride on. Because it is truly used to maintain your property and not a toy or recreation item.

Most other stored items in your garage – summer table & chairs, umbrella’s, patio furniture, gas grill – ARE covered by your homeowners insurance policy. Check with your insurance professional before storing your items in your garage. You may think you are covered but are not.
